live within that Cuban-American community have no idea how Americans outside of their community view them. I read an interesting article about this that stuck with me. I wish I had a link but I read the article a while ago.
The gist of it was that many Cuban Americans view themselves as conservative white people, not Latino or Hispanic. Meanwhile the conservative white non-Latino MAGAs outside of the Cuban American community lump Cubans in with Mexicans, Guatamalans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, etc. This comes as a shock to Cuban Americans who believed they were members of the white, immigrant-hating MAGA club. They thought they were completely safe MAGA members so they supported mass deportation — of others. They didn’t realize that many racist MAGAs perceive Cubans as “others”.
If this wasn’t a major contributing factor to what this country is going through right now, it would be kind of fascinating to me. But since Cuban Americans are just one of many groups who voted against their own best interests, which helped swing the election to Trump, I’m a little too angry to be fascinated.
