Who knows if this is true, but there are rumours that the GOP is desperately trying to find a way out of the tarrifs, since tanking the stock market and destroying the economy is bad for the midterms. Trump just spoke with Trudeau and then posted something unhinged on Truth Social saying that Trudeau couldn't tell him when the next elections are, that he realized Trudeau is doing this to hold on to power, and that Trudeau is actually the whole problem.
So three things.
1. Trudeau resigned. Months ago. The successor will be elected this weekend. There is no power for him to hold on to. He's already quit.
2. He can't tell Trump when the elections will be because he won't be the one to call them. Most likely, that will be Mark Carney, who is VERY likely to win on Saturday.
3. If Trump is looking for a way to back down without looking like he's backing down, he can pin it all on Trudeau and then lift the tariffs when Trudeau leaves office. Which he will start doing THIS WEEKEND.
So let's see if that's what actually happens.
