The states are checking eligibility based on their state's constitution and laws. Based on those criteria, he may or may not qualify to be on the ballot. In some states, a person can be on the ballot even If the person is not qualified to hold the office. President Obama, Secretary Granholm, Taylor Swift, or anyone else could be on the ballot, too; however, none could take the Oath of Office and become President of the United States on January 20, 2025. In some states, the candidate must meet the qualifications for the final office they seek or they are excluded from being on even the primary ballot.
A better headline might be "States Reviewing Ballot Eligibility Criteria May Exclude Some Candidates" because that is where we are in the process. Some states may have already quietly discarded the applications of some candidates for a variety of reasons based on not ineligibility, be that a twelve-year-old paperboy or Elon Musk. They just aren't getting the publicity.
Let's be real. The assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 happened because so many people did not then and do not now know the electoral process. They were easily misled (lied to) by an ultra grifter who played on their ignorance. It's beginning to happen again.
FPOTUS Trump's supporters, with his help, are irate because "he's being removed from the ballot." There are no ballots. He's not being removed from anything. States are determining if he meets the criteria to be on the ballot. It's not like the Dobbs Decision that took away something that existed before. The ballots haven't even been drafted yet for the primaries (ballot vote, caucus sheets, etc.) or the general election. He wasn't on the ballot. NOBODY is on the ballot.
States have rules for eligibility and the voting process. In some states, parties can have any name they want on the ballot as representing their party as the nominee or the slate of potential nominees. The state just makes sure the names are spelled correctly and the names are in the agreed upon order in the proper format, and that's how it goes on the ballot. The ballot administration is largely a filing/typing exercise. If a party wants to list Superman/Clark Kent on the ballot, so be it. It doesn't matter that he's a fictional character. Twelve year old? On the ballot. Born on the moon? On the ballot. The party had the name on the list. On the ballot it goes. Some states pre-clear candidates (Colorado). They won't put a name on the ballot unless it meets the criteria for the office they're seeking. That's why they said they will not put FPOTUS Trump on the ballot. He can't take the Oath of Office for (insert any public office) because of his actions before, during, and after January 6, 2021.
Don't let this runaway horse pick up speed. Lower the dudgeon (Opposite of a high dudgeon, I would guess.) and start 'splaining before this gets completely out of hand...and violent.
[Oops, just found out that Taylor Swift could be president. She turns 35 in December 2024. Think of another "famous" young person and insert the name like Cardi B (She hangs out with Senator Sanders).]
