To me Sonny is hated by most in PC and even some people around him have basically stated in the last year that Sonny shouldn't go down for his crimes because that would make them more unsafe. So more for selfish reasons than anything else. His kids love him and others in his family love him, but I don't think he's seen like a hero like Jason is. And Jason has killed far more people than Sonny. But this is the problem with writing for the mob on a soap opera.
As for Sonny paying for this, I think he should go to jail again for this. But for how long? As long as they aren't writing of Sonny how long of a prison stint would he get? Last time he was in prison a few months if I'm not mistaken. Personally I wouldn't mind Sonny going to prison and being mostly offscreen for a year. But I'm not sure that would happen. It would in theory allow me to watch less. There isn't much else that has me interested in this show right now. Even though I've hated the writing for Sonny the last 4-5 years. He's easily the main reason I watch.
