I think they have changed course. Jason never even told Sonny or Carly that Ava lowered the meds from 25% to 0%. Seems like a pretty important detail to omit--seeing as how Carly is already certain that Ava did it while living with Sonny.
As long as they don't kill off Ava--I don't really care what happens with John Jagger Cates. It's a shame that his character was sacrificed at the altar of a lifelong criminal. But we've been here before. We will be here again until MB retires and Sonny is no more.
