What I saw was that part of the reason that Sonny chose Nina -- who made it clear she desperately wanted him -- is that while Carly was glad Sonny was alive, she wasn't as happy about being his wife. Emotionally she had buried Sonny and her love for Jason finally became possible. Sonny's return coincided with Carly's marriage to Jason. So Carly is looking forward to her wedding night with Jason ... and here comes Sonny and Nina. Even when Nina wasn't around, there was tension between Carly and Sonny. BOTH of them had a hard time dealing with their emotional journey during the months they were apart. Both had fallen in love with someone else and expected to have a future with them. Both got whiplash when the truth came out.
she had let Sonny know he had a family in Port Charles, or told someone in Port Charles that Sonny was alive, none of the above would have happened.
But it wasn't just Sonny's feelings for Nina that got in the way of his getting back together with Carly. She was hesitant as well and I don't believe they had sex in the weeks prior to his ending up with Nina.
