and Shares on Sprina: “One of My Only Regrets is to Not Have the Opportunity to Develop That ‘Ship’ Further”
This is a little concerning as the only Black breakdown writer--she brought a much needed voice to the dialogue that is vital. I remember the Portia/Stella conversation and also the Portia/Jordan discussion on how Cam likely received consideration as as a White male that would not have been afforded to a person of color who was holding a gun.
Decades ago on All My Children a friend of mine played Terrance Frye (Dondre' T. Whitfield)
From 1990-1994. I remember he told me during that time there were no Black writers and he had a meeting with the head writer about the dialogue being all wrong. He was given permission to change the dialogue to bring some authenticity to it with phrases and words. But I remember my shock over what he told me the writer shared with him: Dondre' I truly don't know how to write for Black characters. I would love some insight on what is important to minorities. I will always remember Dondre's response:
"Black people are just like every other race. We care about family, success, sex, finding love, being successful, good health, raising our children, climbing the ladder, and being financially stable. Are any of those things important to you?"
He said the writer set back in his chair and said absolutely. So you're just like me in your wants and desires. Then he pitched him the story about Terrance being attacked by to racist White guys and got his thoughts on if the dialogue should include the N word. Dondre said, since they are racist, and hate-filled enough to both berate and physically attack a Black man--yes. Include the N word.
