While Kate was in the hospital because of getting shot, Claudia visited her and revealed to her that Sonny had slept with her after he and Kate “broke up”.
After Kate recovered from getting shot, Sonny and Kate had a conversation about Sonny having slept with Claudia. A distinction was made between “good women” and “bad women” and the implication that Sonny was attracted to a “certain kind of woman”. Women who were somewhat more sexual.
Nevertheless, Sonny and Kate decided to move on and make an attempt for a new beginning. It is still not obvious why the Bensonhurst proposal fell apart; was it merely a writing choice or was there a deeper reason? From the scenes, and how they were played, it is not easy to tell. Even though at the time, I assumed it was merely a choice of writing by the writing team of the show.
As the conflict between Kate and Claudia initiated, the writing became more and more distinct in defining these women. Characterizing one as somewhat aloof, distant, and perhaps somewhat self-righteous, and the other as sexually aggressive and cunning. One being thought of as being high up there in righteousness and the other being “worthless”, a “whore”.
The scenes written and portrayed between Kate and Claudia on March 26, 2008, and March 27, 2008, emphasized this distinction. Kate was dressed in a black and white outfit and was dealing with Maxie to begin her new magazine. Claudia entered the scene in a dark red dress (crimson?) and began taunting Kate. Kate retaliated by saying lines of words that were meant to, perhaps, set the record straight. Implying that Claudia was, perhaps, lesser than Kate or women like Kate.
In the middle of the argument, Sonny arrived and intervened. Claudia said to Kate that there was a side of Sonny that she was not aware of or that she did not understand. The side that was brutal. The side that sought vengeance. Revealing some of the things that Sonny had done to Claudia, including the scene where Sonny jammed the gun out of Claudia’s hands by first trying to seduce her. Claudia then left.
Sonny and Kate then had a conversation about Claudia and the side of Sonny that she brought out.
Sonny said to Kate that he was not going to give up his happiness with Kate “for a whore like Claudia Zachara.” The conversation concluded there, once again, emphasizing the distinction between Kate and Claudia.
These scenes between Kate and Claudia turned into an instrument that was sometimes used by the fans of the Kate character against Claudia. This situation turned the rivalry between Kate and Claudia into a very much divisive issue where each side wanted to “win” against the other.
This in turn contributed to the direction of the story later that year leading to Operation Cast Lead.
