Supposed to be on I believe 6 months or so. It wasn't planned for him to be a long term character. So at the beginning he was written as a vile, slimy villain. MB was popular and it was decided to keep him on and that's when they took him in a different direction. What he did to Karen was disgusting so I don't blame Jagger and Scott for hating Sonny. As for Stone, I believe Sonny loved him like a brother.
