February 18, 2008 – Kate’s shooting and the aftermath
Later in February 2008, Michael, Sonny’s stepson and Carly’s son, found a gun and shot Kate by mistake. This was what brought Sonny to Kate’s side again.
A duality emerged. When Sonny was at Kate’s bedside, he revealed his better side. His kinder side. The side that Kate had brought out in him. The side that wanted to be a better person.
But when Sonny had scenes with Claudia, the writing had him reveal his dark and cruel traits. His violent side.
In regard to this, there was a scene with Sonny and Claudia where Claudia tried to “seduce” Sonny by pointing a gun at him. Sonny played along but, halfway through, he jammed the gun out of Claudia’s hands and then revealed his disgust at her.
This was the level of sleaze that was written into the story and was one element that contributed to the rivalry between Kate and Claudia and their fanbases later that year. A rivalry that led to tragedy in two circumstances; one in the world of the soap opera and the other in the world of politics leading to “Operation Cast Lead”.
My question to all those who were somehow involved in this so-called story: why did you let this level of sleaze into this story? What was and/or is the reason behind this type of storytelling?
