Sonny and Kate – Valentine’s Day
It was the winter of 2008, and I was waiting for Sonny and Kate to find their happiness. But with every episode, the story became more depressing sending me into the plunge of isolation and despair.
They broke up after Kate ran away from the street corner.
Sonny then had a one-night stand with Claudia and seemed to get more involved in the mob again.
The story dragged on until the Valentine’s Day episode when, again, Sonny and Kate had a conversation.
The characters dug deep into the past and the conversation conveyed the troubles of their romance when they were teenagers and how those dilemmas still existed between them. Sonny probed Kate and asked about her family and why she was not in contact with them, but Kate did not reveal much information except to say that the emptiness in her life existed because of the choices she had made.
The conversation then turned to the aspiration for freedom to be. Freedom to be in love and find happiness in every aspect of life. Here is part of that conversation:
Kate: Sonny, don’t you just want to be free?
Sonny: It’s not that simple Kate.
Kate: You know it is Sonny. Because I want to be free to love you. And the least you could do is to tell me that you still love me.
Sonny: I still love you.
Looking back, I now realize this was more than the conflict of Sonny and Kate’s worlds being incompatible. There was some outside interference in their love story just as there is when two lovers have to overcome something bigger in life to have their happily ever after.
That was the story then and it continued to be the story for the year (and years) to come.
