they brought on Drew since the Jason/Carly/Britt triangle was off the table and they needed to figure out what to do with Carly since they were going with Sonny and Nina.

They brought on Dex to fill the "Sonny's right hand man" position. There is still story for Dex as Joslyn's snuggle bunny, though I will be interested to see if they have him change "professions."

I don't see where Drew fits in other than as Scout's father.
