News for the week of 31-Mar-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

The March 24th anniversary celebration at CBS Television City’s Stage 43 brought on a mutual admiration society, lots of fist pumping, and pumping each other up for 41 years as the #1 soap opera on TV, led by Sony’s Steve Kent and executive producer Jill Farren Phelps. Speeches, almost the entire cast/crew in attendance, cake, a fancy patio lunch, and lots of photo/media opps were the order of the day. One of the soap’s biggest cheerleaders, Kristoff St. John (Neil), pumped them all up with, “We’re here, we’re still standing and we’re still on top of the heap.” The resident thespian, and much-respected fellow actor who grounds this show, Peter Bergman (Jack) spoke up for the show’s impending improvements since taking several hits, losing Jeanne Cooper (Katherine), Michelle Stafford (ex-Phyllis), Billy Miller (ex-Billy), and Michael Muhney (ex-Adam). “This is probably the greatest title change on the show, in a long time… How does a show regroup? I’m seeing signs that people are thinking smartly. I see hints of where they’re going, and it looks promising.” Daniel Goddard (Cane) brought up some salient points that spoke to the soap’s 41 solid years, and counting: “We’re in a good place. This, 41, feels very stable. We just got the three-year pickup. Our ratings are up. The cast and crew have a phenomenal rapport with each other — the writers, production staff, everybody. The big family’s very tight. Forty-one years is special. It’s cool.” –Reporting by Soaps.Sheknows.com’s Deanna Barnert, March 26, 2014

Sharon Case (Sharon) has had to make sense of plenty of storyline turns involving her much-abused character throughout several regimes. It hasn’t been easy resolving Sharon’s hot-and-cold, up-and-down bi-polar diagnosis, causing Phyllis’ coma, lying about it, the recent gaslighting by Victor, and trying to maintain some semblance of decency in a character whose fans are owed a heroine’s welcome. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel for Sharon — and Shick (Sharon & Nick) fans, well deserved — as far as Case can tell. She’s excited to work again with a favorite screen partner in Joshua Morrow (Nick), hoped to resume catfighting on-screen with another favorite, Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki), and playing out the Phyllis reveal. It’s gonna be good for Sharon, Case promised. The Phyllis reveal. “I loved it when I found out. I am honest when I don’t like something, but I think everyone is going to like it!” she told Michael Fairman for On-Air On-Soaps (March 24, 2014). “I honestly can’t imagine anyone not liking how this all comes out and gets wrapped up. It’s so good! I love when there is a storyline and everyone out there has all these different guesses, and yet we have come up with the cleverest way to handle it. It’s so fun to watch Twitter and watch all of the fans guesses!  I can’t tell anyone, because it’s so exciting!”

As an honoree, Y&R/B&B co-creator Lee Phillip Bell will attend the Accessories for Success Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show for the annual Guild of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles (BBBSLA) April 11 in the Beverly Hills Hotel. Doug Davidson (Paul), Heather Tom (Katie, B&B; ex-Victoria), and John McCook (Eric, B&B) present this year’s “Innovative Award” to Phillip Bell for her work to spotlight social problems in TV programming in her years overseeing the shows.

Cady McClain (NuKelly; ex-Dixie, AMC) was kind enough to share with fans her first day on the set of Y&R in her blog, March 20. Of course she dropped some industry and L.A. insider stuff, hot water and lemon for breakfast, RF mikes, The Grove, aka Farmers Market (“…as if I mean an outdoor fruit and vegetable market!”). And she loved on the cast members she caught up with and re-met, including Amelia Heinle (Victoria) — the first to greet her, David Tom (Billy), Kristoff St. John (Neil), and her AMC pal, Peter Bergman (Jack; ex-Cliff, AMC) who burst into her dressing room for a gabfest reminiscing about old comrades and amazing veteran actors still in their prime, like David Canary (ex-Adam/Stuart, AMC). She also felt incredibly welcomed in small and large ways that she never experienced before — “Back at AMC and ATWT (As the World Turns) we always had to pick up and return our costumes so I gotta say, I was feeling pretty damn fancy” … “Oh and they did a really nice thing for me: the stage manager announced my name to everyone and they all applauded to welcome me to the show. I mean, seriously. I don’t know if I’ve ever had that! WOW.”

Got Baldwins? Christian LeBlanc (Michael) hosts Louisiana’s Got Talent, an April 26th, 6:30 p.m.-10 p.m., celebrity fundraiser put on by the Louisiana Center for Women in Government & Business at Nicholls State University, in partnership with the Bayou Junior Women’s Club. Based on the hit reality-TV competition, America’s Got Talent, the fundraiser will also have LeBlanc’s co-stars Tracey Bregman (Lauren) and Max Ehrich (Fen) as judges, along with several Louisiana celebrities. The fundraiser is meant to help the Junior Women’s Club, the Alice Marx LeBlanc Nursing Scholarship, the Mary Aucoin de la Bretonne Displaced Homemakers Scholarship, and LCWGB’s Louisiana Girls Leadership Academy. Tickets go for $50. Dinners included. Call (985) 448-4770 for more. The fundraiser takes place at Thibodaux’s Nicholls State University Cotillion Ballroom, 906 E. First St.

Wanna meet Tracey Bregman (Lauren)? She’s holding an online competition for fans to gain VIP Access. Just submit, in 300 characters or less, your favorite Y&R moment featuring Bregman and you could win a guided on-set tour with her. The grand prize-winning fan will be selected via e-mail on April 2. Five first-place winners — and their guests (one per winner) get to meet Bregman at her Ride of Fame induction ceremony April 7, held in New York City.

Be a part of HARK in the PARK-ing lot, April 13, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. (PDT), in North Hollywood, along with Ignacio Serricchio, some special guests, and for a good cause, the kids. The general admission — 180 tickets left, as of Friday, March 28, 4:41 p.m. — is only $18, so book now. Los Zorros and a DJ will play music, the kids’ll get to enjoy painting stations and lots more. HARK stands for Healing Arts Reaching Kids and is exactly what it says. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles provides art and music for kids in a non-traditional way, inspiring spontaneity and sparking creativity. Children under 12 don’t have to pay to get in.

Sean Carrigan (Stitch) is one newcomer who caught on fast with Y&R fans. The comedian/actor joined Daytime Confidential’s soap bloggers Jamey Giddens and Luke Kerr March 26 for a podcast about his pairings, the squish name he and Amelia Heinle (Victoria) jokes about sharing—does it rhyme with Witch?, his “steamy” scene coming up March 31, and his time on Tyler Perry’s movie, Single Mom’s Club.

Slight change of debut date: Cady McClain (ex-Dixie, AMC) replaces Cynthia Watros as Kelly, showing up first on April 16. Eileen Davidson (Ashley) and Beth Maitland (Traci) pop back in on April 18.

Here come Jacob Young (Rick, B&B) and Linsey Godfrey (Caroline, B&B). They visit, probably for Chelsea’s fashion show, April 4.

With the recent casting call for an “Aaron Newton,” many in the industry smell an Adam Newman recast. The actor who wins this contract role tapes in May. What gives it away? The part that reads something like: only those with very strong acting experience need apply.
