News for the week of 27-Apr-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Despite complaints of boredom, Y&R won “Outstanding Drama Series” along with DOOL in a tie. “Outstanding Supporting Actress” Amelia Heinle (Victoria) and “Outstanding Younger Actress” Hunter King (Summer) also won for their show. The rest of the winners are over at the official Daytime Emmy website.

Love him or hate him, but new Y&R head writer/executive producer Chuck Pratt Jr. knows how to grab the audience’s attention. He did just that when he stepped into this powerful role and literally transformed a boring, chatty soap opera into an action-adventure murder mystery around every corner. In an April 22nd interview with Michael Fairman, Pratt extoled the virtues of his type of wham!-bam! storytelling. Pratt does what he feels is best to propel character and story, and please the audience, never mind what the network tells him. The network forbade guns and violence on this show, and in short order, he had Steve Burton’s Dylan, whom Pratt knows from GH as the mob enforcer Jason, wielding a loaded weapon. That’s how Pratt operates. Judging by all the exciting buzz, from the fans and the cast — Eric Braeden (Victor) is a huge fan — it’s working. “When I first got to Y&R people were drinking coffee and having conversations, and sometimes very interesting conversations. Now they come in and they’re red-faced and their blood pressure is up. It’s life and death stakes, whether it be this show, All My Children, or General Hospital it’s like what I do.”

A huge part of Pratt’s appeal is his ability to zero in on the popular core characters — featuring Victor and Jack more — who spark on-screen, as well as including all generations — the Scooby Doo gang’s murder mystery. His decision to give the charismatic anchors of the show, Braeden (Victor) and Peter Bregman (Jack), their own lead story capitalizing off amazing chemistry is sheer brilliance. That’s what the audience wants, and that’s what Pratt gave them with this Fake-Jack storyline turn.

“When I was watching the show all I said was, ‘You know what? Eric Braeden (Victor) and Peter Bergman are this show!’ They were important in the show that I was watching, but they are the show!’ They are not the tent poles, they are not controlling it, and I thought Peter Bergman is such a great actor, and the Victor/Jack relationship is such a great rivalry. How do I mix that all together and give Victor what he wants?” Pratt explained. “In my mind, Victor wants everything that Jack has all the time, even if he never says it. Eric and Peter are so good in completely different ways. So, I thought I have to create the dark side of Jack, and so this character becomes Victor’s best friend. There is tons of melodrama and story around it, and lots of back-story. Who is this guy … and where is he from? People have to find out, or not find out, and this story will go for a good period of time.”

There’s more. Check out the rest of Fairman’s interview to get inside the mind of Pratt. He saw potential in Burton’s Dylan and Sharon — champion of the underdog — that nobody else thought to play into. It looks like he’s going to rescue Michael from an uncomfortable, overdone ED/prostate cancer downer as well.

May Sweeps: Billy and Chelsea think they’re going through with a wedding, but they’ll split up soon, Avery’s gone! and taking Joe with her — although it’s to help the guy heal, Michael tries to sow his wild oats after suffering from a kind of mid-life ED crisis, before Nick can enter Sage, they encounter some anvils from the past, Sage figures into a shocking reveal, Victor and Fake-Jack somehow get involved in the Scooby Doo mystery, Fen returns in a shocking plot shakeup, Phyllis plays detective after noticing her “husband” isn’t behaving normally, but her investigation could harm those she cares about, Fake-Jake could ruin everything for Victor and his business ambitions, the Abbotts will not go down without a fight, Adam throws in as an Abbott, Dylan continues to champion Sharon, liking her more and more, Sharon shows the fighter in her, Dylan and Phyllis try to caution Avery to tread carefully with Joe, Avery’s just worried Dylan will take up with Sharon, Hilary keeps getting drawn to Devon, and Neil may not be finished with them.
