News for the week of 22-Sep-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens September 18, 2014 confirmed that Charles Pratt Jr. (AMC, Melrose Place) will take over as Y&R’s new head writer, after Highlight Hollywood first reported on the rumored negotiations. Pratt will also receive an executive producer credit. Wrote Giddens: “I confirmed the news with an insider at the top daytime sudser. Pratt will be head writer and will receive an executive producer credit, though, from what I hear, that will be more about money than anything else. Jill Farren Phelps is remaining as showrunner.” Despite a reputation for going with plot over character-driven stories (at AMC), Giddens’ source said Pratt “is a good storyteller, and that’s what Y&R needs.”

As mortified as everyone was about Mariah coming onto Nick, the actors — especially jokester Joshua Morrow — had fun with it. Camryn Grimes originally played Cassie, Nick and Sharon’s daughter. The actors who played Cassie’s parents also treated Grimes like a daughter off-camera. So when Grimes had to play Cassie’s lookalike (before she found out she was her twin) Mariah as this Nick-hungry femme fatale, there was more than a little hesitation. Grimes told Michael Fairman in a September 15th On-Air, On-Soaps interview that she honestly didn’t think TPTB would go there. When they did, Sharon Case (Sharon) joked that Morrow had the most fun with the twist. “Joshua thought it was hysterical!” Grimes said. “I thought he was going to be horrified like I was, and have a normal sane person’s reaction. But he just thought it was the funniest thing in the world!” Morrow knew there was no way in hell he was going to be filmed kissing Grimes in the fantasy sequence, or allow that to happen — he made sure executive producer Jill Farren Phelps was aware of that — but in the meantime, he enjoyed Grimes’ reaction. “Now let’s be clear: I wasn’t enjoying Camryn Grimes putting the moves on Joshua Morrow. However, what I was taking an incredible amount of pleasure in enjoying was watching the physical effect it was having on Cammie saying the words, and looking longingly at me.”

Casting’s on the look-out for an older, name actress to convincingly portray a 70-year-old grandmotherly type. Constance is stuck in a wheelchair. She will first appear October 8; it’s recurring.

Another fortune teller? Yep. Seana Kofoed (Men In Trees, Suburgatory) plays Madame Isadora, the psychic, who will spook Genoa City residents with her accurate spoilers readings, starting October 17.

Gossip for the week of 22-Sep-2014

More than a few Y&R fans have put this speculation out there in the last few weeks, especially since the appearance of Maureen. But what if it’s true? What if Stitch never committed patricide? He just covered up his mom’s homicide, hmmm?

Daytime Confidential’s Sara Bibel September 19 reported — based on her sources — that others were vying for the head writer spot, including former Y&R writers Josh Griffith and Sally Sussman Morina. “While Y&R’s executive producer Jill Farren Phelps reportedly favored Griffith, Sony was allegedly wary of hiring someone who quit the last time he was in the position.” So Phelps is alleged to have pushed for Chuck Pratt for the role. The long and the short of it is, that a primetime writer might’ve been chosen over a daytime one. “My source believes Phelps wanted to be sure she had a head writer who would support her vision for the show, so she lobbied for Pratt because she has worked with him before and rightly thought she could sell the network on him.”

Looks like Y&R’s PTB are gunning for primetime brand names over daytime when casting. -_-
