News for the week of 16-Mar-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

The nobility as Hilary is forced — out of love and devotion — to fall back on her original villainy catapulted the exquisite Mishael Morgan to the category of an award-winning lead actress. Two weeks ago, during the fallout from Neil discovering Hilary and Devon’s tryst, she decided to act as if she’d planned on using both men all along as the ultimate act of revenge for her mom when in reality, she was trying to save them both and salvage their family. In a March 9, 2015 Michael Fairman interview with Morgan, Bryton James (Devon), and Kristoff St. John (Neil), the dramatic fallout benefitted both the cast and the fans who have been following this Shakespearean tale from the beginning. Thanks to the addition of head writer/executive producer Chuck Pratt Jr., Morgan got to play out that twist while giving her co-stars ample opportunity to respond in turn.

“I was so excited to get to play that scene,” Morgan explained. “I knew she was just doing that to help the situation for Neil and Devon to mend their relationship. It was just so much fun to play, and the different levels of one character is always fun. She has been nice, but she can be mean, and she still has this underpinning of wanting to be with the man that she loves. I honestly think she loves both of them. She sees that both Neil and Devon are essentially destroyed because of her, and now she just wants to fix it. She doesn’t want to be the person who destroys the men she loves most in the world.”

Despite a few challenges — St. John had to play out most of this Shakespearean story literally blind — all three actors rose to the occasion without losing their characters’ humanity and individual perspective. Both Morgan and James honored St. John for embodying the heartbeat of the triangle through the blindness challenge. “For the story, and the drama of the situation with us having an affair, it was great, because there were a lot of different things we got to play,” James elaborated. “In story, we were right at the moment, which was going to be the hardest thing in the world, which was to tell Neil the truth about us before he went blind. Then, having to know that now we are going to have to do something that is more difficult, which is try not to be together, which is almost impossible, while helping Neil through this while keeping our secret. It was a great twist for the plot.”

Both Kristoff St. John and Bryton James submitted pre-nominated-worthy work for Daytime Emmy consideration. St. John spoke to the story’s broader effect, which is probably why it stood out and worked so well with so many in the audience. It moved realistically through key, relatable “Shakespearean qualities. It kind of has this Romeo and Juliet, and the Capulet’s and the Montague’s quality to it. This story is classic by design, and it also has just amazing potential to take us into other areas, like this one here is talking about – she is going to find redemption, and she will. For what her self-sacrifice is going to be, the audience again will love her. That’s the whole idea of being a villain, and then coming back strong. This feels a little like ‘Rear Window’ and Jimmy Stewart as he sits and looks and watches the apartment building across the way where he watches everyone in their separate little cubicles. This is our cubicle, where you can’t help but peer in and want to see what happens. You see the star-crossed lovers. You see the father who can’t see anything, and you are vying for them both in a strange way. There are the haters, and there are the lovers, but you can’t tell me that is not good story. Eventually, Jimmy Stewart will solve the entire thing, and everything will come out, and that is what is happening right now.”

For Hevon fans, Mishael Morgan (Hilary) and Bryton James (Devon) will host a live video chat March 19, 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. Tweet with the #AskYR hashtag for consideration. Ask James how it felt to make that tiebreaker in last week’s #CBSSoapMayhem hoops match against B&B.

Eric Braeden (Victor) is hosting a Twitter contest with fans involving them guessing who his character was talking to in the confessional. Fans must tweet their guesses with #VictorConfess by “mid-April.” The first correct answer gets the winner a personal call with the veteran actor.

From The Price Is Right to Y&R? Australian hottie James O’Halloran has made the most of his win in a male model search competition for the game show, including a, most likely, regular stint there, a March 12th guest appearance as Lauren and Michael’s server on the CBS soap — with maybe more to come, several plays in progress (an original and a Tennessee Williams classic), and even a movie role, Deadly Crush. Soap Opera Network’s Errol Lewis interviewed the young, budding actor in a March 11, 2015 feature. “It’s been an absolute trip since winning. It’s been a really great ride,” said the male model-turned-actor. “It’s certainly stretched down and I’ve got some dates booked all the way until this season, so I guess we’ll wait and see what happens after that. There’s been some talk of them making a chair with my name on it so that might mean that I might be coming part of the furniture there [at the game show].” O’Halloran, who is also a martial arts expert, guitarist, and singer, enjoyed interacting in his server scenes with the friendly soap veterans. “They were such a pleasure to work with,” he enthused. “[They were] so accommodating and they strayed away where they were interested in me and asking questions. Asking if I wanted to run lines with them and that sort of thing… just really welcoming and friendly making me feel right at home.”
