News for the week of 16-Feb-2015

She did it. Emmy-winning actress Victoria Rowell (ex-Dru) filed an extensive lawsuit against CBS and Sony for not letting her come back to daytime after she voiced strong opinions about the network’s hiring practices. She first joined Y&R in 1990, making Drucilla a popular character for the CBS soap. She ended her Y&R tenure in 2007, because of what she believed to be racial discrimination, as mentioned in the suit. She’s tried to come back to Y&R or even start anew on B&B, since 2010, but her efforts have been unproductive, according to the complaint. Rowell filed her complaint last week in federal court. Daytime Confidential’s Luke Kerr February 11 reported: “Rowell claims the defendants rejected her re-employment in retaliation for Rowell’s public advocacy to increase the presence of African-Americans in daytime soap operas in general and on ‘The Young and the Restless’ in particular. The complaint alleges that defendants have rejected her even though African American women, who comprise a huge percentage of the viewership for ‘The Young and the Restless’ and for daytime soap operas in general, have clamored for Rowell’s return and rejected all of the defendants’ efforts to replace her on the show over the years.”

CBS issued an announcement to Rowell’s complaint, as reported by Soap Opera Digest online February 12. In the statement, CBS expressed: “We were disappointed to learn that, after leaving the cast of The Young and the Restless on her own initiative, Ms. Rowell has attempted to rewrite that history through lawyers’ letters and a lawsuit that has no merit. We harbor no ill will toward Ms. Rowell, but we will vigorously defend this case.”

Justin Hartley (Adam) gets to reprise Scott on Mistresses for two shows. His guest-starring gig will not mess with his current soap airings.

Bryton James (Devon) fielded the usual questions about his character’s popular (?!) pairing with Neil’s wife, Hilary, Hevon, in a February 11th interview with Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens. James said he’s extremely thankful and humbled by the love pouring out from fans on Twitter in reaction to Devon and Hilary’s love story. He also said he felt it’s about perfect timing, as he’s enjoyed several good runs of storytelling for his character. “To be honest, I think it was all the right timing. I was given extremely meaningful and big stories over the first nine years, from losing my hearing, to finding out I was Mrs. Chancellor’s grandson. So I think it gave the audience the perfect amount of time to see my character grow and become believable in a leading romantic story like this one. But of course, I’m very happy they paired Mishael [Morgan] and I together!”

James and Morgan live-tweeted with fans last Friday. They included a photo of themselves with some choice Hevon gifts from fans. Among the gifts? Champagne flutes engraved with the actors’ names, which James promised to include in scenes of the fictional couple’s wedding, if there is one.

Which side do you fall on with Victoria Rowell’s (ex-Dru) lawsuit against CBS/Sony? Some daytime fans feel she’s a trouble-maker who’s making too much of a fuss. Others agree that it’s time someone fought back against the daytime network’s alleged discriminatory practices. I say, I can’t wait until there’s a tell-all mini-series about this soap opera. Could you imagine?
