News for the week of 14-Apr-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

It took Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe) some time to work up the nerve to finally cut the cord. And now, she’s getting all these deliciously catty fight scenes?! The actress has made a name for herself for a decade playing the deliciously catty fashionista Chloe, but it’s time for her portrayer to spread her wings and find other TV projects out there, preferably sitcoms where she can really get funny. Hendrickson spoke with Soap Opera Network’s West Coast editor Kambra Clifford for an April 10th interview (Part 1 of 2). Working off a kind of timeline, the feisty actress revealed her final filming to be the week of April 21st, most likely with Chloe just taking a leave of absence to sort through her grief and anger alone off-screen. Before she goes, she goes out in a blaze of glory with another one of those glorious catfights at Chelsea’s fashion show debut. Obviously, Hendrickson and her friend Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea) loved filming every last punch. They really got into the choreography and wore the war wounds to prove it. “Things are getting physical, and not in a sexual way! We get physical, and we had such a good time doing it,” Hendrickson enthused. “And the great thing about Missy is that she was all in and ready to take one for the team. Everything [you’re going to] see is real; we really went for it. I even had bruises at the end of the day! Granted, I do bruise really easily, but it’s funny, because as the bruises were getting darker and bigger throughout the weekend, I kept on sending Missy pictures and was like, ‘Look at what you did to me!’ It was pretty funny.”

Once Hendrickson does leave the show and the cast that have made up her home and family for so long, she said she wants to try comedies, lots of comedies. “I’m trying to stay open to anything, but I would really love to stay in television. I’m kind of a TV girl, and a dream situation for me would be sitcoms. I started on stage, and the fact that I could rehearse for an entire week and then perform in front of a live audience on Friday, that’s a dream for me. And I would love to do some plays, time permitting, obviously. I would love to be back on stage. That would be a great thing. And movies, of course.” She’s not so sure she could handle filming a movie though, after having done Y&R so long with its much faster pace. Could you imagine? She can’t. She admitted she’d go insane waiting around to get the show on the road. “But the one thing I think with movies for me is, I’ve been used to working so quickly, I feel like I may go out of my mind if it takes seven hours for us to shoot a quarter of a page! I mean, I shot five scenes in 25 minutes last week. The pace at which I’ve been working, especially the last few years, [has made me] a little impatient, and I don’t really like sitting around the trailer and waiting. But then again, just to be working, collaborating and to be able to do what I love to do, which is acting, I would really be happy no matter what medium that is, whether it’s on stage, whether it’s on film or on television.”

Before she goes, Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe) leaves fans with lots of food for thought. And images, and comments, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into her magical world, here. She’s asked fans to submit their wish lists for what to see.

From the very start, Steve Burton (Dylan) made sure to welcome Sean Carrigan (Stitch) to the show. Burton introduced himself and got to know Carrigan since they’d be playing war buddies. It was a warm, kind gesture Carrigan really appreciated and credited with helping him ease into his newcomer role. “My first day on set he [Burton] came to me and was like, ‘Hey man. You’re playing Stitch, We’re war buddies. Let’s get to know each other.’ And the rest is history. He’s been amazing from the first day I started, and that’s why I’m still here on the show.” Burton put the ball back in Carrigan’s court, stating that the newcomer did all the heavy lifting. “He’s getting a big story and he’s doing a great job.” Both Burton and Carrigan spoke some about their upcoming stories, as things begin to really heat up, with the reveal of Dylan’s true parentage and Stitch’s deep, dark secret. Burton liked how the writers allowed Dylan to get to know his mom Nikki and develop that bond. He also thought Dylan’s idyllic situation with Avery might soon hit a snag — “I can’t eat cake and pie my whole next year on the show” — and would appreciate bringing back the “important subject” of PTSD for further exploration. As for Stitch’s deep, dark secret, it’s probably gonna be a doozy, Carrigan hinted, one not even Dylan knows about. Stitch’s thing with Victoria is most definitely the fly in the ointment, he added. Jess Walton (Jill) and Tristan Rogers (Colin) beat the drum yet again for their sexy, passionate, once-in-a-lifetime on-screen pairing, Part 2. When TPTB pulled Colin away from Jill the first time, Walton was pissed off. She believed in their organic love story and felt such a kinship between her and Rogers’ characters. “I was so excited the first time around with Tristan and then I was so angry when it ended because it was so successful,” Walton told Nelson Branco of Soap Opera Uncensored recently. “What gets me about this relationship is: Jill was very sexually attracted to him at first and then we thought Cane died, and Colin was really wonderful during that time, and I think that’s when she fell in love with him with her heart and soul. Their sexual relationship is so strong because they really, really love each other. That’s what is behind it all. She finds him enormously funny and she loves the good in him. Add the sexual attraction, and it’s … really powerful.”

Rogers returned the compliment, and then some. He stated that he’s not on the air to go in-depth about the meaning of life and the betterment of humankind. He’s there for entertainment. If it feels good, do it! And playing the sexy romance with Walton’s Jill feels oh-so very good. “Basically, when we’re working with each other, it’s fun loving.  I’ve never been one to look at the script and say, ‘Oh, what’s the message or depth or truth of it.’ That’s not me at all. I want the entertainment value. I want people to tune in tomorrow and not run away to think about how they can be a better person. And that’s what I see in the both of us. There’s this desire to be fun with the script.” –via Michael Fairman, April 9, 2014

Jess Walton (Jill) and Tristan Rogers (Colin) conducted a joint-Twitter chat with fans last week. Most of the interaction was definitely of the entertaining, not in-depth, variety.

Fans can live-tweet with Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea; ex-Annie, AMC) and Jacob Young (Rick, B&B; ex-JR, AMC) April 14, 9:30 a.m. PST as they get ready to watch the two former AMC stars meet on Y&R.

Matthew Atkinson (Parenthood, One Tree Hill, Drop Dead Diva, Jane By Design) — who’s been friendly with executive producer Jill Farren Phelps for the past year, off and on — will play Austin the cameraman — for Avery’s new cooking show. Austin is a recurring character, starting April 17. Who is Austin exactly? On-Air On-Soaps Michael Fairman picked the actor’s brain for a preview at a recent Y&R 41st anniversary celebration on-set. Atkinson said that so far his character will just show “up at the right place at the right time” as Avery’s cameraman, but then will have a “tortured past and some major history” to deal with. Austin also enjoys an encounter with Summer, which may or may not mean a romance. “Not 100 percent sure on everything, but I remember meeting with everyone at Y&R about the character and I am really intrigued to play [Austin],” Atkinson said. “He has a rough history. I think when everyone finds out what happened to him in the past; it’s going to make him a much more interesting character.” Atkinson’s first experience with acting on Y&R was catching Steve Burton’s (Dylan) 10-minute scene in taping. Needless to say, the soap newcomer was blown away by both Burton and Collins. “I feel like I have a lot to live up to!”

Michael Fairman caught up with Christian LeBlanc (Michael) on the red carpet at the 5th annual Indie Series Awards where the soap actor was nominated for his part in the web series, Fumbling Thru The Pieces. For his part as Bruce Daniels on three episodes in 2012, LeBlanc had a quick learning curve to go through when he first took on the younger brother. He was so used to going dark (with Y&R), that TPTB had to remind him it was a comedy. Speaking of dark comedy, check out LeBlanc’s reaction to Fairman’s question about Lauren’s surprise pregnancy.

Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson returns to the set April 16 to film scenes for May 19, again with Victor Newman, then Stitch. A football player aspiring to be an actor, Robinson was last seen on Y&R March 13 getting hired by Victor.

Casting call: Y&R needs a black actor to play Dr. Barton to his new wife Leslie. He’s a surgeon in his 30s-40s. It’s a recurring role, which films next month. “Open to name actors.”

Helen Slater (Supergirl, Smallville, The Lying Game) appears as ob-gyn Dr. Chiverton starting May 2 for five episodes so far.

Lauralee Bell (Christine) did so well on her new web series mI promise she was named a Webby Award honoree for Online Film and Video’s Drama Individual Short or Episode. Bell made the web series in the hopes that viewers will understand the true dangers of texting and driving for everyone, especially teens. The web series focuses on the consequences of texting and driving for one particular teenaged girl. Bell portrays the mom. “I am so proud that mI promise has impressed the selection committee for the Webby Awards. That’s the icing on the cake for our mI promise team. Our entire goal was to reach teens, pre-teens and adults about what can happen when you text and drive at the same time. If we’ve helped to make people consider the consequences by providing a dramatic example, then we accomplished what we set out to do. [Michael Fairman, April 10, 2014]”

Casting would like to try out actresses for the role of Stitch’s estranged wife. Or so tweeted Nelson Branco: “Y&R is doing a big search for Stitch’s wife. Shoots three episodes starting next month. The show wants a name. Deeply hurt by Stitch, she is vulnerable, but very tough and a good mom.”

Here’s a thought: Could Stitch have been the drunk driver who ran over Kelly’s son?

Trevor St. John (ex-Todd/Victor, OLTL) may have been approached by Y&R’s PTB to be the recast Adam, along with Tom Pelphrey (ex-Jonathan, GL). TV Guide columnist Michael Logan tweeted, in answer to a fan’s question, that both actors reportedly turned the offer down, ala: “But I hear TSJ said no to Adam. So did Tom Pelphrey ‪#‎YR.”
