News for the week of 13-Jul-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Tim Teeman of the Daily Beast went behind the scenes, literally and figuratively, to get the scope of the process of filming the #1-rated CBS soap for a July 6th feature. He interviewed executive producers Jill Farren Phelps and Charles Pratt Jr. (head writer), as well as several actors, including Camryn Grimes (Mariah/Cassie), about anything and everything related to soaps. They reacted to the changes soaps had to make in order to keep up with the times. Notably, veteran soap actor Peter Bergman (Jack) spoke to the improvements, like picking up the pace and cutting out those meandering conversations that go nowhere. “Some people like all that drawn-out stuff. It drives me insane. I’m trying to get to the fucking finish line every time I’m out there. People ask me all the time why am I not bored. I play a mercurial character who can be good, or bad, or ruthless. I love getting to my dressing room and opening my script.” Soaps turned out to be a boon for Bergman, who first started on daytime as one-half of the AMC supercouple Cliff and Nina. Bergman admitted that he initially looked down on soaps when he first joined the force, but then he noticed these were real actors doing real good work. Then, he noticed the schedule was a lot more compatible with his go-get-‘em personality. “I’m not one who wants to do 25 takes of every scene. I’d go out of my fucking mind. I’m an early riser, I have been all my life. I wake up at 5 o’clock, and 5:15 Saturday and Sunday. This is a perfect job. I’m on camera at 8:05 and I better look good [laughs].”

Teeman’s treatise on Y&R is way too long. But if you can spare an hour or three, check it out. There’s a lot more than what’s been paraphrased and excerpted here.

Tristan Rogers (Colin) makes an appearance July 29.

Kelly Sullivan (Sage) signed a contract, up from recurring.

Lou Ferrigno Jr., aka The Hulk, shows up July 14-15 in a bit of stunt-casting, playing a guard.

Casting is on the search for an Spanish actor in his 20s-30s to pull off the recurring role of sexy, independent Luca, of Latin nobility.

Both Justin Hartley and Melissa Claire Egan play star-crossed lovers Gabriel (Adam) and Chelsea on the show. And both — when the sh*t hits the fan this week about his real identity/charade — would rather play all the beats of such trauma and torment, over playing house in a happily-ever-after monotone. They’re actors. TV Insider’s Michael Logan interviewed the two friends (Hartley is seeing Egan’s best friend Chrishell Stause [ex-Amanda, AMC]) for a July 8th update on the fallout from the confession. They theorized how Adam and Chelsea will end up after a year of all this drama. Here’s an excerpt:

>> Hartley: I love working with Melissa but, from Adam’s point of view, getting everything you want might get boring. If that happens, I would hope they’d split apart but then find their way back to each other again.
Egan: You never want your character to be happy on this show. You want to be cheated on. You want to be lied to. Everything you wouldn’t want in real life, you hope for on a soap. That’s where the drama is. But I can’t see them being apart anytime soon. Despite all the lies, Chelsea can’t resist Adam. And that’s a problem. She can’t escape him. She can’t say no. At the end of the day, they’re still madly in love with each other.
Hartley: And he would do anything for her. <<
