News for the week of 07-Apr-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

In the 25 years of taking over the role of Jack Abbott (from the amazing Terry Lester), multi-Emmy-winning actor Peter Bergman (ex-Cliff, AMC) has never felt his character ever truly gave the great Victor Newman a run for the money in and out of the boardroom. Bergman doesn’t blame Newman’s portrayer, Eric Braeden, at all for the disadvantage. “Eric plays what they write, and what they write is nobody dares cross the great Victor Newman without losing his head,” Bergman explained. But the writers throughout the years? Well… “It’s been such lopsided writing for so long that, yes, I’ve always longed for Jack to have a really good fight with Victor Newman, where Victor thought, ‘Oh, my God, I’m in trouble!’” The current regime has given Bergman hope, though, when Jack got to point out to Victor’s family that he’d blackmailed Adam over Delia’s death. There, Bergman saw signs that the great invincible Victor Newman could be brought down, and by his arch-enemy Jack. –Soaps in Depth interview by Julie McElwain, April 7, 2014

Christian LeBlanc (Michael), Jeff Branson (ex-Ronan), and John Driscoll (ex-Chance) will show up for the annual SoapFest, May 23-26, on SW Florida’s Marco Island. They join other soap stars for a variety of fun stuff designed to expose them to fans, including A Night of Stars (Q&As, auctions, photos, first-ever game night), a Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash where the stars play bartender for the fans to help raise money for children, and the popular Cruisin’ Boozin’ & Schmoozin’ cruise.

The Globe got on Melody Thomas Scott’s (Nikki) bad side by printing an April 7, 2014 article that alleged that she tried to talk Susan Lucci (ex-Erica, AMC) out of coming onto the show, after executive producer Jill Farren Phelps reached out with an offer. The allegation continued, making it look like Thomas Scott went into detail about how horrible Phelps was as an EP. Thomas Scott got wind of this tabloid trash and took to her Facebook March 31, 2014 to set the record straight. First off, she wrote that she didn’t even know Lucci well enough to talk to her on the phone for anything, much less know each other’s numbers. While Thomas Scott acknowledged the bad reputation associated with Phelps, she denied that there was any truth to the rumor that the EP has made it unbearable on-set. Quite the contrary: “In reality, our set has never been as relaxed and copacetic, with a very warm vibe, due to some recent changes made. In my 35 years in Genoa City, there has been only one regime that made us walk on eggshells, and it wasn't under Jill. Sure,we were warned of the ‘Wicked Witch’ that was blowing our way, but she has been nothing but a great leader, gracious, professional, approachable and a pleasure to work with. They also intimated that I was upset that my husband (who, btw, has a multi-year contract with ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’), didn't get Jill's position of EP! Utterly ridiculous! Edward is extremely happy at B&B and would never think of switching shows. I'm sure CBS legal would have a few things to say about that, too! And, Brad Bell as well! Don't get me wrong: If Susan were to come to YR I would welcome her with open arms, just as I would any actor coming to Genoa City. It boggles my mind that a rag could print nothing but falsehoods. Usually, there is a small grain of truth, but not this time! Don't believe everything you read, kids!”

Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) graces the upcoming Hollywood Show in L.A.’s Westin Hotel LAX, April 12, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and April 13, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Come over, meet her, have her sign memorabilia. If you’re there and know of who might’ve stolen her photo with President Bill Clinton, do let her know. She’s asking fans to be on the lookout — eBay, Amazon, Craig’s List — for the photo; there’s a reward involved.

The New York City Ride Of Fame organization will honor Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, inducting her into its initiative April 7, noon, Pier 78. Ride Of Fame features mobile monuments of outstanding public figures in New York City. It will bestow a bus from its fleet to Bregman, reflected in a permanent decal on the front and a personalized message on the seat of the top deck.

Kristoff St. John (Neil) isn’t so sure his character would go after Hilary if his son Devon wanted her. He also appeared quite reticent (cautious) about the triangle, giving the Winters family the first real storyline boost in a long time. Bryton James (Devon), on the other hand, was gung ho about giving his character a full-on adult triangle. He saw exciting angles to playing against Neil for Hilary’s love. “Devon’s older. They can come at each other as equals and fight over someone if that’s the way that they go,” James said. “I think Devon needs to get up the courage to actually go after what he wants because he’s been beating around the bush with his feelings about Hilary.” St. John posed a different perspective: “Would this man, who is such a good father—who is supposedly a good father—trade in his relationship with his son, if indeed that’s where they go with it, for another woman? I don’t think so. I think he is noble to a fault. He is not a Victor Newman. Jack Abbott has more nobility than Victor, but Neil for some reason has become this voice of reason, the calm in the storm and would not exchange his relationship with his son for another woman.” Mishael Morgan (Hilary) and St. John both noted that where her character came from plays a lot into this factor. The mother angle, for one thing, creeps her out a little. Neil was tripping on Hilary’s mother Rose, before she died. “That is a little creepy. I thought about that. But I guess you can’t choose who you fall in love with.” Regardless of whom Hilary chooses, Morgan seriously doubted it would ever be for financial gain. The character is trying to improve her karma and be the better person. –Daytime Confidential, April 4, 2014 interview by Sara Bibel

The Cooking Channel star Mo Rocca (My Grandmother’s Ravioli) will appear as Milton, the accountant, soon. He was on-set March 28, 2014.

It would make a great deal of sense (no, I lied, nothing about this sh*t show makes sense anymore) if faux-Cassie were real Cassie’s twin sister. But based on portrayer Camryn Grimes’ latest interview, faux-Cassie might just be a regular ole “doppelgänger,” like we all have them laying around. “But if you keep up on interviews, Camryn Grimes said … that faux Cassie was not real Cassie’s twin. She also mentioned that the reveal of who faux Cassie would be [would be] disclosed slowly.” Loose Lips, SoapTOWN USA, March 30, 2014

Before Sharon and Nick can enjoy another love reunion, they must survive Victor’s machinations. They do have Nikki’s sort of blessing; she gives up trying to interfere.
