News for the week of 06-Apr-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Even though GH took the most nominations (28) in the 42nd annual Daytime Emmys, Y&R came in a solid second with 25, and will probably win a sweep come April 26th — aired live on the Pop cable channel, 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Despite lackluster storylines up until the take-over by Charles Pratt Jr., the actors on this show are the strongest in every category. That strength will probably give them the most coveted “Outstanding Drama Series” win, with only B&B possibly as the spoiler. The following Y&R actors are up for Emmys this year, with *My Picks: “Outstanding Lead Actress” — *Gina Tognoni (NuPhyllis), “Lead Actor” — *Billy Miller (ex-Billy), Christian LeBlanc (Michael), “Supporting Actress” — Amelia Heinle (Victoria), *Elizabeth Hendrickson (ex-Chloe), “Supporting Actor” — *Kristoff St. John (Neil), “Younger Actress” — Hunter King (Summer), “Younger Actor” — Max Ehrich (Fenmore), and “Special Guest Performer” — Meredith Baxter (Maureen), Sally Kellerman (ex-Constance), *Ray Wise (ex-Ian Ward).

Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens asked Y&R actors for their Emmy-nominated submissions and provided them in his detailed April 2nd report.

CBS Soaps In Depth went one step further and sought out reactions to the Emmy nominations by the Y&R actors. Kristoff St. John (Neil) actually didn’t catch the announcement the first time. But when he did confirm his name was on the list, he tried to be philosophical about the honor — “I'm going to cast my fate to the wind, and if I should be so lucky and walk up on that stage... we'll see what happens. I'm in a tough category. I'm honored to be invited to the dance!” — and remembered a co-star who he felt should’ve been included, his on-screen son Bryton James (Devon). Amelia Heinle (Victoria) also didn’t learn about her nomination directly but in a text. She was in Georgia to see her sister at the time. Obviously, she deserved the nomination with her submission, Victoria’s response to the anniversary of the death of Delia, her stepdaughter. Heinle said she’s so glad Billy Miller (ex-Billy) and Elizabeth Hendrickson (ex-Chloe) were chosen as nominees in their categories for the same story. “If she wins, I will be extremely happy. She did such a great job and she's such a sweet, sweet girl. And that was a tough competition last year. I'm shocked that I won. I thought she really deserved it!” Elizabeth Hendrickson (ex-Chloe) wasn’t even going to submit herself for consideration, thinking it would be weird since she left the show, but she did in the end, with a reel where Chloe bids Kevin farewell on the anniversary of her daughter’s death. Hendrickson wished Greg Rikaart (Kevin) had submitted himself for consideration, and what about her friend Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea)?! “I was really bummed not to see Missy get nominated. I was really proud to see her submit in lead actress. I think that was an awesome, bold, well-deserved move. So I was bummed not to see her up there, because I think she deserved it. You never know how these things work!” Like Heinle, Christian LeBlanc (Michael) received word of his nomination through a text — for him, via Steve Burton (Dylan) first while he was at the gym. LeBlanc took the nomination in stride, as a win for the entire industry. “It's a celebration for all of us. It's our business card. It's an interesting process. You hate it or you love it. If you're nominated, you're not by any means the best actor in the world or even of daytime. You are there celebrating the community of daytime along with the rest of your peers.” Gina Tognoni’s (Phyllis) proud mom told her to watch The Talk for the Daytime Emmy nomination announcement. Tognoni was back home in New Jersey on a break at the time and settled in to watch her co-stars receive their due, when her name was mentioned too. Then, Tognoni tried to call her mom but, “She won't pick up her phone! I’m thinking, where are you now that I need you? But you know what she's probably doing? She's probably talking to all of her friends. My mom is the biggest cheerleader of my life. Both my parents are. But she really loves all this. She loves the show.” For Tognoni to receive a nomination right off the bat in a tough recast role is an achievement in itself. She said her reel featured an argument with Jack over the new woman, Kelly. That’s why she couldn’t fathom Peter Bergman (Jack) and Cady McClain (Kelly) missing the cut. Count Max Ehrich (Fen) as another actor out of town when the announcements came in. He happened to be filming his other job, Under The Dome, on location in North Carolina, when he perused Twitter for word about his co-stars. It’s his third shot. His reel was carefully chosen for the emotional impact of cancer, on everyone. “I did that scene because I know a lot of people, including myself, who have lost loved ones to cancer, and I thought it had a strong impact. I felt really emotionally connected to those scenes, and finding out. Christian [Jules LeBlanc, Michael], Tracey [E. Bregman, Lauren] and Greg [Rikaart, Kevin] were all in those scenes, and everybody was outstanding. I feel like I owe it to them, because I was just reacting off of them,” he explained to CBS Soaps In Depth for an April 2nd report. Which was why he was “truly saddened” by the omission of his on-screen mom, Bregman, “because she's phenomenal as an actress and the scenes that she's had, they were amazing. She has my vote!”
