News for the week of 09-Nov-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Executive producer Frank Valentini envisions a new love for Genie Francis’ Laura, now that Luke’s gone. Fine by her. More than fine. In a November 4, 2015 interview with TV Insider’s Michael Logan, Francis talked about her new lease on life, under a new head-writing team. “There’s so much history with Laura. They re-did the commissary at the studio and now they have photos of some of the actors who’ve worked on the ABC lot over the years and there I am! I was so touched by that, so thrilled. I was 14 when I started on GH. And here I am again,” Francis explained. The actress understands why Laura is the one to notice something off about little Jake. After all, they were both held captive by Helena, she pointed out. Now that Francis’ two children are grown and out of the house, she is even more grateful to have a place to go for her creative outlet.

Chad Duell (Michael) revealed that playing grief and worry over a severely injured Sonny wasn’t as easy as it seemed. The actor playing Sonny was goofing around the entire time. He even had on underwear with “Papi” emblazoned on it, with a couple more for good measure. (Papi is this character voice Maurice Benard goofs around with on-set.) “I was trying to focus on making it real,” Duell said of the scenes after Sonny got shot. “That’s what people want to see. They want to get sucked in and really believe!” –ABC Soaps In Depth, October 26, 2015

Too bad Ryan Carnes (Lucas) is close to a beach in L.A. instead of Maui, or the Caribbean. The actor is quite appreciative of all the benefits of ocean living, having come from the farm. But the Pacific Ocean isn’t the same when you have to deal with pollution. In an October 26th pictorial for ABC Soaps In Depth, Carnes talked about enjoying the beach as much as possible, despite avoiding the water, “it’s not as safe as it used to be, now that all the radioactive waste from Japan is arriving on our shores,” and taking care to put on natural sun protection when necessary. Nevertheless, in “SoCal, it’s such a gift to be so close to both the beaches and the mountains, and know that in a single day, I can visit both if I really want to. I love that.”

Despite a riotously stupid public reveal, Emme Rylan (Lulu) and Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) turned in realistic performances as a couple in peril following a cheating plot point. Rylan and Zamprogna rely heavily on one another during such intense scenes. She’s a bit more go with the flow, even in the October 26th photo shoot with ABC Soaps In Depth and Jim Warren, while he relies on her lead. They’re really a good team, sharing family in common and so much trust. “It feels like every scene [we] do is a collaboration, Rylan said. When they’re not filming, they talk about each other’s children. “His two older girls are a year younger than my boys. [So down the line] I think we’re going to have a double-wedding [for them]. It’d be perfect.”

Weird. When ABC Soaps In Depth/StarTalk asked, “Which of your co-stars is the cast social director? [Oct. 26],” a few of the respondents indicated that they don’t really hang out off-screen much to warrant much of an answer. Ryan Paevey (Nathan) said, “I’m not a huge social butterfly myself. I maintain friendly relationships on set, but I don’t really hang out with a lot of people from the show outside of [the studio]. If you find out who that person is, tell them to include me next time!” Emme Rylan (Lulu) said that everyone she knows there is too busy with their children to even have time to plan social events. At least Jackie Zeman (Bobbie) and Lynn Herring (Lucy) have time to plan birthday parties and get-togethers, together. “We did that as our kids were growing up. We’d get together at one of our houses, and she’d bring stuff, or I’d bring stuff.”

November Sweeps, aka the reveals, were quite underwhelming, because I’ve been through this circle jerk of plot over character before. The pattern of dragging stories out until the all-important money shots of Nov./Feb./May Sweeps isn’t lost on me anymore. I wrote about it in the latest SoapHub commentary.
