News for the week of 08-Jun-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Before leaving GH, Jeffrey Parise (ex-Carlos) stopped by TradioV’s Soap Box with hosts Lilly Melgar (ex-Lily) and Martha Madison (ex-Belle, DOOL) May 28, and then On-Air On-Soaps’ Michael Fairman for a final wrap-up. He talked about auditioning opposite Maurice Benard (Sonny) for the role of “blue-collar” mobster Julian Jerome initially before TPTB asked him back to try out Carlos, Julian’s hitman. He hit on one of his final scenes shared with Teresa Castillo (Sabrina) during GH live. It was as emotional to play as it was for viewers to watch. “Teresa … in the scene we just watched broke my heart, and especially when I hung up with her, and Finola as Anna is asking her, ‘Where is he?’ It literally broke my heart … the resistance in her saying ‘Pier 54,’ what a moment! I knew this was the last scene with her (Teresa) and I, and all the incredible scenes and moments we had shared within the acting experience of the past two years was going to be gone.”

So far, so good. Robert Palmer Watkins (Dillon II) made his first day on the job look like a piece of cake. He shared scenes immediately with two Emmy-winning, veteran soap actors — Tony Geary (Luke) and Jane Elliot (Tracy) — last Tuesday, and held his own. He revealed loyalty to his mom, Tracy, first, and small peeks of the famous Dillon humor made endearing by original portrayer Scott Clifton (who gave his thumbs-up). Watkins told Soap Opera Digest online that same day that it was a pleasure to finally join the soap opera he first tested for years ago back when he was a recent American Musical and Dramatic Academy grad. "I feel like Dillon has a very strong stance on things and he is very confident, which can come off a little cocky, but he’s also very lovable and he’s a good guy deep down. I’ve always loved comedy and a sense of humor is really important to me, and I think Dillon is very witty, very sharp and very humorous." At first, the soap newcomer said, Dillon will be all serious, but eventually viewers will see the hilarious side coming out. Watkins received high marks from co-star Emme Rylan (Lulu II).

Speaking of… Emme Rylan’s quite the busy actress and entrepreneur. You don’t hear much about her in the soap press, but she’s attached to a crowdfunded dark comedy called Shevenge as an award-winning actress and co-producer. Shevenge is about “a group of young ladies as they embark on a journey of revenge and empowerment! While at a killer slumber party, these ladies drink wine, paint their nails and pay back their crappy boyfriends – played by David Blue (‘Stargate Universe,’ ‘Ugly Betty’), Eugene Byrd (‘Bones,’ ‘True Blood’) and Dove Mier (‘Dig’). All the while paying homage to their favorite genres of film and television. With a mix of horror, fantasy and action, the ladies of SHEVENGE invite the audience to come right along into their deepest fantasies! [wearemoviegeeks.com, January 2015]” The new film was an official selection in Dances With Films 2015 (May 30) and premieres June 13th at Etheria Film Night, 7:30 p.m., Egyptian Theatre, and then L.A. Film Fest, 10:20 p.m., Regal: LA Live. Rylan earlier won best actress for her role in Shevenge at the April 9-11, 2015 River Bend Film Festival in Indiana.

Rylan’s also an Etsy artist, making her one-of-a-kind jewelry for a growing number of fans. Check out this recent black chain: simple, edgy, current, and a best-seller.

As rumored, Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) returns, along with Nathan Parsons (Ethan), and Emma Samms (Holly), presumably to help usher Tony Geary (Luke) out this summer.

Lisa LoCicero (Olivia) and husband Michael Patrick Jann have a baby girl to add to the family. Her name is Verity Marion, born May 30 at 8 lbs., 11.21 oz. Verity joins her big brother Lukas, 13.

Emmy-winning daytime actresses Finola Hughes (Anna), Maura West (Ava; ex-Carly, ATWT), and Michelle Stafford (Nina; ex-Phyllis, Y&R) held each other — and the sisterhood — in high esteem during a special interview with On-Air On-Soaps’ Michael Fairman, posted on June 6. All three commented favorably on each other’s work, while also mentioning other actresses on GH. They attested that there were no egos on the GH set, just support for powerhouse leading female roles. The special interview, “GH’s Mutual Admiration Society,” was originally published in the 42nd annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy program/almanac before the awards ceremonies.

Gossip for the week of 08-Jun-2015

DD’s Trixie on June 5th dropped some spumors, largely surrounding Luke’s summer departure. Included in the rumors: Jennifer Smith is very likely the reason Luke refuses to marry Tracy after all, in order to keep Lucky — held prisoner — safe. Here’s more: Luke and Laura are forced to go on another adventure to rescue their son Lucky from the kidnapper’s clutches… They’ll drag the rest of the Spencer clan, including Lulu with Dillon, in on the fun… Everything gets resolved by August… Trixie also spilled contract rumors, as in the reason TPTB were able to procure Genie Francis’s (Laura) return — “Genie has a six-month contract with 13-week outs” — is they dropped Ian Buchanan (Duke), Wally Kurth (Ned), and Sean Blakemore (Shawn) to afford her, I guess. Also, more cast members could drop to make way for Rebecca Budig (Hayden) if she returns permanently. —Via SoapZone GH board June 5 posted by RehvengeIsSweet

Soap Central columnist Tamilu buried the juicy rumor in her June 8th Luke send-off: Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio) is coming back to join in on the fun. “Will Luke's longtime friend Robert Scorpio come to town to see him off, since his dopplegänger from Genoa City doesn't have much to do these days? (Spoiler alert: yes, he will!) Will I have to take a sick day from work the day after Luke says goodbye? (Spoiler alert: yes, I will.)”

Technically, Luke isn’t really leaving. The door is always open. But for all intents and purposes, this is the end. For many longtime fans, it’s about f*cking time. On my June 5th SoapHub commentary, “Goodbye, Luke (Now Get Out Already!),” I try not to get too sentimental about the end of an era.
