News for the week of 07-Jul-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

Ryan Paevey (Nathan) admitted the Daytime Emmys’ Red Carpet interview he underwent was odd. He was aware the Red Carpet hosts were vloggers without any real connection to the soaps, but tried to handle their off-color and inappropriate questions (they joked about wanting to rape him) maturely. When Paevey wasn’t being led back to the same line of questioning — it was obvious Soaps.com’s Candace Young found the Daytime Emmy Red Carpet hosts distasteful and disrespectful to the soap genre, but this interview isn’t about her — he was asked about the usual GH storyline and character interaction. He predictably said he enjoyed working with his co-stars, found Kathleen Gati (Dr. Obrecht) really multi-talented, and for the most part, mused about his character’s motivation in light of all the family lies and Nina’s deception especially. The actor said he enjoyed fan response to his evolution on the show, however. It’s been a pleasant surprise to know he’s pleased many of them. (What’s not been so pleasing? The bashing over his acting ability, but that subject was never broached.) Read Young’s interview for more surprises from Paevey, including his medieval obsession.

Sara Bibel of Daytime Confidential must be the fastest transcriber in the West. She rattled out so many back-to-back interviews of the stars at the Daytime Emmys, it was ridiculously mind-blowing. Bibel asked the real-life couple, Bryan Craig (Morgan) and Kelly Thiebaud (Britt) if their characters would ever hook up, or even randomly meet in a July 2nd post. They could only say they hoped so. Craig said, “They’re doing things to bring our characters closer and closer to meeting. She’s running into people that I’m related to and vice versa, so it could happen. We honestly don’t know. We hope that it does.”

And here’s another Daytime Confidential exclusive from Bibel around the same time frame, when she spoke with Michelle Stafford (Nina; ex-Phyllis, Y&R). Stafford admitted she already knew her new GH character would be revealed as a psycho, from conversations with head writer Ron Carlivati. In order to properly inhabit her character, the actress actually researched sociopaths on Fatal Attraction and There Will Be Blood. She also acknowledged the similarity in scope between Nina and Phyllis, circa 1995. “I’m like, ‘Wow this is really bizarre.’ Ron doesn’t know Y&R, but there are a lot of similarities. But the person is completely different. Nina is completely bonkers. Phyllis was more villainous, while Nina is just really disturbed.”

Meet Emmy winner Maurice Benard (Sonny) at his August 1st The Ghost And The Whale screening. Buy tickets first, then learn the location of the meet ‘n greet, which starts off at 6:30 p.m., then enjoy the 8 p.m. screening and 10:30 p.m. Q&A with the movie panel. The actors and directors will be on hand.

Executive producer Frank Valentini said something profound to Michael Fairman at the Daytime Emmy Red Carpet, but… I don’t care. If you do, check the video out. Valentini talks about the cast as if he’s reciting from the Hollywood playbook — just the way the soap opera community likes it, tempered, banal, and safe.

Surely, there are better ways to spotlight the fabulous Kathleen Gati (Dr. Obrecht) then forcing her evil on everyone. What’s worse, her daughter learns nothing from the past, turning around to repeat the same mistake by relying on a lethal mother who will not hesitate to execute anyone in her way — just for a man. To say nothing of using a child. This is why soaps will never evolve with the times, and need to end.
