News for the week of 04-May-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Boredom with playing a legacy soap character as some hero nearly drove Tony Geary to leave his role as Luke Spencer — until executive producer Frank Valentini gave him an offer he couldn’t, as an actor, refuse. Valentini took a meeting with the recent Emmy winner, assessed the situation, and posed an important question: “I know you're getting anxious to leave, so tell me what you've never done on the show in 37 years and what would you like to do?” The rest is Fluke history, and one of the best, if not the best story Geary said he got to play. “They delivered in spades. They did it so well, motivated it so well, brought in his history and... [now] I can explain all kinds of things about his behavior that I couldn't before, so it's been a thrill to do this. It's been amazing material.” Look for Geary to participate in the live May Sweeps shows, May 15 and May 18, as more of Luke’s dark history comes out. –Soap Central April 29, 2015 interview by Kambra Clifford

Executive producer Frank Valentini tweeted April 29 that Genie Francis (Laura) “is coming back to General Hospital!!!”

Chad Duell (Michael) felt amazing the night he won his first Daytime Emmy as “Outstanding Supporting Actor” last week Sunday. After all this time watching other actors take the win, it was nice to hear his own name for a change. In an April 27th interview with Sara Bibel on Daytime Confidential, Duell said that for the longest time he resisted turning Michael dark without a very valid reason. It arrived when Sonny killed A.J., then the young actor was on board. For the upcoming live May Sweeps episodes, Duell begged off, though. “I don’t think I’m doing the live episodes. I kind of angled for that because I get a little stressed... It’s kind of a cool experience because it’s like doing stage [work] but you don’t get much rehearsal. So I’m not doing it but everyone who's doing it is going crazy. We’ll probably do it again if it goes well and I’d probably do it in the future. We’ll see.”

Casting wants a 50-something white actor to take on a recurring role of the usual.

Gossip for the week of 04-May-2015

Missed two of my most recent commentaries over at SoapHub? Not to worry. On April 24, I wrote “Daytime Kills Diversity,” which intended to be my usual rallying cry against discrimination. Instead, it turned into something else entirely. My most recent commentary is probably going to garner the most … controversy … because I take up for Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth) as a GH legacy character — at the small expense of Laura Wright’s and Kelly Monaco’s for a point of comparison. If you knew how I felt about Herbst and Elizabeth at the onset, you’d appreciate how much the actress turned me around. My evolution about her is proof that I have no agenda other than a good show, good acting, and good storytelling. Give me those, and you’ve got my soul.

In last Friday’s scenes leading to the climax, Elizabeth tears into Ric after his public betrayal of her with the realism of a seasoned professional and an actress incapable of turning in one false note. Her strong vulnerability tore me up, summoning up a strange protectiveness I’ve only ever felt for Jonathan Jackson (Lucky). As many fans tore up the social networks about the travesty of Elizabeth possibly keeping the Jason secret to herself, I’m keeping an open mind. It honestly doesn’t bother me, because whatever TPTB have in store for her, I know Herbst will make the most of. She always has. Besides, it sure beats the alternative, right?

Carol Weber will be on vacation the week of May 11. News & Gossip will return the week of May 18.
