News for the week of 01-Feb-2016

by Carol Banks Weber

As usual, the Daytime Emmy soap prenoms came out last Wednesday to whining and bitching from viewers about who didn’t make it more than who did. Noticeably missing from GH: Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth), Kelly Monaco (Sam), Billy Miller (Jason), and Jason Thompson (ex-Patrick).

Y&R boasted the most prenoms, with GH in third. All the prenoms advance to the next round starting Feb. 22 for the final countdown. On March 24, The Talk will announce the final list of nominees.

The strongest contenders from GH are as follows:

  • Outstanding Lead Actress — Finola Hughes (Anna), Laura Wright (Carly), Maura West (Ava)
  • Outstanding Lead Actor — Maurice Benard (Sonny), Tony Geary (Luke)… *Good luck going up against Justin Hartley (Adam, Y&R), boys.
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress — Nobody from GH made this cut.
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor — And nobody from GH will win in this category.
  • Outstanding Younger Actress — Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma)
  • Outstanding Younger Actor — Nicolas Bechtel (Spencer), Bryan Craig (Morgan), Tequan Richmond (TJ)

Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma) is also up for a Young Artist Award for her work on GH. Joey Luthman (young Luke, 52nd anniversary show) earned a nomination in the “Best Performance by a Recurring Younger Actor in a TV Series Ages 14-21” category. Winners enjoy their acclaim March 13 at the Sportsman’s Lodge in Studio City, Calif. The Young Artist Awards is put on by the Young Artist Foundation and the Social Relations of Knowledge Institute.

When William deVry (Julian) first came on the show, he was meant as a foil for Sonny, the mobster, not a love interest for Alexis. But deVry and Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) benefited from a second look and a renewed, mature love story under the new writing regime. The two gave Michael Logan of TV Insider and viewers plenty of material to buzz about from Part 1 of their Jan. 27 interview.

Grahn’s happy with her side of the story. She gave the new head writers (both female) her seal of approval. “The reason I don’t snoop is that I’m very happy with our new head writers, Jean Passanante and Shelly Altman. I feel they’re looking out for me. If I have a problem, I can go to them and have a reasonable conversation, and that’s the first time that’s happened since I’ve been at GH, except for when Megan McTavish was head writer. She also wanted an open line of communication. That was not the case with me and the past few writing regimes.”

With that, Grahn and deVry proceeded to passive-aggressively throw shade at the previous writers save the ones they saved for praise. Hear that, Carlivati? To wit:

>> deVry: The female characters on GH have become way more interesting since Jean and Shelly came along.
Grahn: It’s as if the women are now being lifted up.
deVry: The show is less plot-driven, more character-driven.
Grahn: Our brains are being acknowledged. The stories have become more real and less cartoony. <<

Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) and William deVry (Julian) both agreed that GH is more character-driven now under the current head writing regime. Laura Wright (Carly) and Maurice Benard (Sonny) also felt the lightness of portraying the gravity and the levity of one of the most compelling, central families in soaps, post-Carlivati.

“It’s not plot-driven. The material is more emotional and character-driven,” Wright told Michael Fairman in a Jan. 28 interview with her leading man. “The scenes are longer, but they are also about family, love, and fear, and to be afraid and still taking a step. The stories are about all the stuff we have to deal with in life. In our reality in Port Charles, of course it’s heightened, because it’s a soap opera, but everyone has all those same challenges. It’s relatable.”

Most of the interview is about Fairman, Wright, and Benard in a lovefest, loving each other as actors (after Benard initially not wanting anything more to do with Carly), loving other cast mates, loving their place in the story, loving what’s coming up next.

Wright left a memorable mark by singling out what made working with Benard so special. “The number one thing for me as an actor is trust. As fast as we work, I never worry about any scenes with Maurice,” she explained. “If anything, I will get concerned about some dialog that I have, and I will say to him, ‘Can we go over this so I can get a rhythm?’ and that is so I can then throw it out the door. I trust Maurice to the point where I don’t really know what might happen when we hit the stage. You don’t even have a plan in your head, because you know whatever is going to happen, it’s so magical, and authentic in the moment. It isn’t even a concern. I don’t even worry. It’s an easy day working with Maurice. Always, always with Maurice at the end of our day we always give each other a hug and a high-five. We do a high-five, because we know the scene and the moments were great. It’s so nice.”

Where’s Lynn Herring (Lucy)? Apparently back on the farm with her family — until or if TPTB want her back for a real impact in a story. Here’s her Facebook message to fans, posted Jan. 27:

>> Thank you all for thinking of me… and Lucy, of course, it means so much! I am loving ranching and Museum-ing (is that a word?) right now. I do miss playing Lucy but I am not interested in a line here or there or a day once in awhile. All the years of happiness and satisfaction I had playing Lucy are too important to me, and I would never want to belittle all the great memories I have of her adventures. If Frank and the writers need Lucy for a story or a firm connection in the show then I will jump out of my saddle and come running for sure… <<

Teresa Castillo (Sabrina) gave birth to her second child, a son. She and her husband Shane named him, “Bliss.” Just kidding. No name yet. She Instagrammed the moment last Monday.

Ashley Jones (ex-Bridget, B&B; ex-Megan, Y&R) had a hell of a time keeping a lid on her secret. She’s Professor Parker, the one sharing an intimate moment with Krissy, and maybe more. “They were so secretive about it that I've been scared to tell anyone. They made it very clear that [Parker's gender] was a reveal and they didn't want me to give it away,” Jones, a GH fan, explained in a Jan. 29 SOD online blurb. An in-depth interview’s coming.

Gossip for the week of 01-Feb-2016

by Carol Banks Weber

“Huge GH News coming Next week!!! Stay tuned. #GHWildWinter,” tweeted EP Frank Valentini on Jan. 29. Cue Kelly Thiebaud (ex-Britt) posting a pic of herself shackled to a hospital bed with a script under her legs, dropping a major hint. So I hear. Thiebaud blocked me awhile ago. Her loss.

A better option: Greg Vaughan (ex-Eric, DOOL) returning to play Lucky again. He said he would, provided the circumstances were right. Sounds like he’s about to take on another project, though.
